Preface for The Road to Wellness
With the emergence of Homo erectus, one of our most closely related and successful ancestors, human physiology began evolving through a process of “trial and error” we call evolution. Primarily, this is influenced by environmental factors present in the geographic locations that we occupied which determined the food available to us, the year-round temperature, the topology of the land including the proximity to water and physical barriers such as mountains, valleys, and lakes.
Beyond environmental factors, random genetic mutations produced changes to our bodies, some of which were favorable and some that were not. These affected our success in living within our physical and social environment. This is what Darwin called natural selection, which is the primary factor that determines the “survival of the fittest.”
These evolutionary forces created what we are, how we function, and the degree to which our species affects all other living things. In that sense we have become the “keystone species” that plays a critical role in maintaining the structure, balance, and health of an ecosystem. Our presence and activities have a disproportionately significant impact on the ecosystem relative to our population.
However, when food sources shift drastically or the environment undergoes sudden, dramatic changes—whether due to volcanic activity, extraterrestrial impacts, climate change, or war—these disruptions can trigger a rapid decline in dominance, potentially leading to eventual extinction.
Since the Industrial Revolution, our diets have shifted toward increasingly unnatural and less nutritious foods. Soil depletion, combined with the proliferation of processed and ultra-processed foods driven by economic priorities that favor profit and consumer dependency over health, has severely diminished the quality of our nutrition. These changes, coupled with a decline in physical activity, have contributed to the rise in chronic illnesses and a troubling reduction in life expectancy.
If we do not reverse this trend, we risk joining the 99% of all species that have ever existed that have gone extinct. Our survival depends on urgently addressing this crisis by forging a healthier, more sustainable path to wellness.
Please note that I make extensive use of hyperlinks throughout this book indicated by blue underlined text to provide optional, additional content. If you would like to learn more on a given word or phrase, simply click on the blue text which opens a new page containing additional information. Once you have completed reading, click the X on the tab at the top of the page to return to the same spot you began. I have also embedded videos and video podcasts related to the current subject, as well as authoritative articles from sites such as NIH or major health clinics.
I provide hours of embedded videos throughout this book on critical topics, offering deeper insights that bridge the gap between surface-level familiarity and nuanced understanding. These videos highlight key, often overlooked details of each subject. While I aim to keep them as concise as possible, I occasionally include more comprehensive presentations on complex topics. Viewing these videos is optional; they are intended to enhance your understanding in areas where you may need additional context or knowledge.
Remember you can always return to a given video at a later date. E-Books have built-in features that allow you to index and highlight personal notes that you can create as you read. There are also advanced features that provide text-to-speech conversion.
When addressing topics with numerous facets, I often use an outline format to keep the content clear and engaging for most readers. This approach allows me to distill key information while avoiding unnecessary details or excessive verbiage. For those seeking deeper insights, I encourage further independent research. By focusing on essential points and minimizing embellishments, this format delivers a concise and accessible presentation of the subject matter.
At the end of each chapter, I provide a custom audio podcast featuring a male and female hosts who discuss the chapter’s content in an engaging and accessible way, minimizing technical jargon. This format makes the material easier to understand for a broader audience, with key terms and concepts explained in more detail in non-scientific terms.
The podcast also offers additional insights and nuances that complement the text, deepening the reader’s understanding of each chapter’s themes. If your book is stored on a portable device such as a smartphone or tablet with a speaker or Bluetooth capability, you can listen to the podcast while commuting, exercising, or relaxing at home—just like an audiobook. If there is a given chapter that you do not have current interest in, you can skip the text for the time being and listen only to the audio podcast, which can also be used as a preview tool or as an alternative to reading the text.
Importantly, this podcast is not copyright-protected, allowing you to share it freely with others who may be interested in achieving greater wellness. To share, simply copy and email the URL provided on the Buzzsprout server page that appears when the podcast launches. My goal is to make this valuable information accessible to as many people as possible.

Four Chances to Receive a Free Copy
By launching The Road to Wellness using the Kindle Select program, not only is my book available at no charge to “Kindle Unlimited” membership, but I also intend to make the book free of charge on four days… June 1, June 15, August 1, and August 15. If you purchase the book on one of these days there will be no charge. In addition, you will receive the Kindle Reader free of charge along with a complementary Kindle library account.
If after reading the book you feel compelled to write a brief review stating your opinion of its content and the value that others might receive from it, it would be greatly appreciated. Instructions for properly completing this process with Amazon are listed at the end of the Preface. Also, as stated, the embedded podcasts that I place at the end of each chapter are NOT copyrighted.
If you know anyone that might be interested in learning more about a given subject outlined in one of the 11 chapters or my newsletters, please feel free to copy and share (by email) the link to the specific Buzzsprout.com page that loads when you click on “Listen to the Podcast” at the end of each chapter.

My Apologies
Although I greatly enjoyed writing my weekly newsletters I simply cannot continue to do so without any form of financial compensation. Please understand that at my age, working 80 hours a week, and absorbing all production costs for the newsletter, podcasts, and artwork is simply no longer possible. Instead, I feel it would be more productive to author books on specific topics that could be purchased at minimal cost from Kindle Amazon and other digital print outlets.
I am aware that many of you would prefer an all-text paper version of a book, however it would never be possible to provide anywhere near the total informational content of an e-book because of its inherent file compatibility making possible, video and audio podcasts, authoritative scientific/medical links, definition files, and site referrals.
In addition, my dedicated audio podcasts that I embed with each chapter, can be held on a smart phone, tablet, or PC and played in your car or at home, provided you have a suitable Bluetooth link to a radio or stereo receiver. Further, these non-copyrighted audio podcasts can be shared with anyone of your choosing simply by copying and emailing the URL address shown when the podcast is launched.

My Website is Still Available
For the time being, almost every one of my newsletters produced over the last year are still available at: https://the-human-condition.beehiiv.com
However, when I stop paying the Beehiiv monthly fee, access to these articles will eventually be lost, so this is the time to act.
If anyone would like to contact me, my contact email address is still [email protected]
Until next time, take care and stay POSITIVE…Dr. G
